Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of tweaking sites to perform better. It comes in a few guises:

1. Optimising the site for speed (file sizes, compression, cleaning up, fixing broken links)
2. Enhancing the keywords on pages to target your audience
3. Making sure you are listed on websites (business directories, for example), to increase your backlinks to the site

While there is no magic bullet with SEO (all the search engines have their own algorithms, which change all the time), you can certainly do as much as possible to increase your odds. Generally, we find the first and the best thing to do , is try and speed up your site.
